A catalyst for advancing women’s rights and boardroom diversity

Writer: Women on Boards CIC®Women on Boards CIC®

Women on Boards CIC®, a community-driven initiative aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals to create lasting impact for women to lead in entrepreneurship.

At its core, Women on Boards CIC® (WOB CIC) is driven by the conviction that every woman deserves a seat at the table and that diverse leadership is essential for sustainable economic growth and social justice. Aligning with global goals From the outset, the founders of WOB CIC set out to incorporate the United Nations (UNs) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their mission, giving the CIC deeper meaning and a globally recognised purpose. Whilst there are 17 SDGs, careful research during the creation of the WOB CIC vision and mission helped narrow the focus to the following four most relevant goals:

  • Goal 5: Gender equality

  • Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth

  • Goal 10: Reduced inequalities

  • Goal 17: Partnerships for the goals

These four pillars are integral to WOB CIC’s framework. Strategic alignment by design supports global human rights but also cements partnerships - most notably with UN Women UK - a partnership which was forged after these goals were implemented into the CIC’s operations.

The WOB CIC pillars closely align, and include:

  • Inclusion and empowerment - a focus on creating equal opportunities for women

  • Innovation and excellence - equipping women with the skills, knowledge and networks to stimulate economic growth, whilst creating a diverse landscape

  • Sustainability and growth - ensuring women from all backgrounds have access to scalable and adaptable models, as well as access to opportunity

  • Advocacy and influence - amplifying the impact of collaboration with policy makers, influences and a range of stakeholders that will create a shared sense of partnership, driving systemic change

The B1G1 and our impact donation model

A key turning point came in January 2023 when one of the founders, Payal Walker, encountered the B1G1 platform at a TEDx event. B1G1’s model of “Buy One, Give One” resonated with the ethos of WOB CIC, offering a perfect synergy.

Today, after every session, co-founders Payal Walker and Sandra Wiggins donate ‘impacts’ - tangible contributions that embody the belief that every interaction shapes a better future. This innovative approach transforms advocacy into direct community support to causes that matter.

They’re goal is to give back 10,000 impacts by 2030 - see their progress here: https://www.womenonboardscic.com/our-impact

It’s a dual commitment to both policy reform and community empowerment, ensuring that progress in boardroom diversity also translates into improved lives and opportunities for women everywhere. Real-world impact WOB CIC is committed to transparency and accountability. Every impact donated is recorded on their website, where real-time widgets showcase the cumulative contributions.

This offers a live testament to the organisation’s dedication to change.

And as the on-going work evolves further, the co-founders plan on adding and aligning to more of the SDGs.
